૧૮૪૫ પછીની ગુજરાતી કવિતાની રૂપરેખા આપતો 'સુન્દરમ્'નો આ વિવેચનગ્રંથ છે. અહીં જૂના અને નવા એમ બે પ્રવાહોમાં કવિતા વહેંચી છે. સ્તબકો, એના ખંડકો તથા પેટાવિભાગોમાં, વિકસતી કવિતાને કાલક્રમે અવલોકી છે. કુલ ૩૫૦ જેટલા કવિઓની નાનીમોટી સવા હજાર જેટલી વાંચેલી કૃતિઓમાંથી સુન્દરમે અહીં કાવ્યગુણ ધરાવતા લગભગ ૨૫૦ જેટલા લેખકો અને તેમની કૃતિઓને અવલોક્યાં છે. અલ્પપ્રસિદ્ધ કવિઓ અને કૃતિઓમાંથી વધુ અવતરણો લેવાનું અને દોષોનાં દ્રષ્ટાંતોને ટાળવાનું લેખકે મુનાસિબ ગણ્યું છે. આ સમગ્ર અવલોકન પાછળ, કાવ્યનું મૂલ્યાંકન કરવાને કાવ્યની પોતાની જ દ્રષ્ટિ સૌથી વધુ ન્યાયપૂર્ણ નીવડે છે એવો સંકલ્પ રહેલો છે. છંદોલય, શબ્દવિચારશૈલી અને આંતરિક તત્વની ત્રિવિધ સામગ્રીને મૂલ્યાંકનના મુખ્ય ઘટક ગણી કવિતાને આનંદ અને સૌન્દર્યના કર્મ તરીકે તપાસી છે. કૃતિઓનાં પ્રત્યક્ષ વાચન સાથે મળેલો આ શ્રદ્ધેય ઇતિહાસગ્રંથ ઝીણવટથી થયેલા પરિશીલનનો મૂલ્યવાન નમૂનો છે.
